Design Engineer, HCI & Experiences

San Francisco (Potrero Hill) · Full-time · Hybrid · $170-200k+

About Raven Resonance

Raven Resonance builds stylish ambient computers in glasses form for all-day wear, plus a new operating system that enables intuitive interactions with apps and physical objects.

Our first product, Raven Prism, has the form factor of a stylish pair of glasses, but is powered by a moddable Linux-based OS. It has eye control, hot-swappable batteries, and a full-color waveguide display. Raven Prism 1 is designed for Technical Creatives and has pre-orders.

We design and engineer custom hardware & software at our San Francisco lab and are manufacturing in the United States.

We are funded by VCs including Tim Draper, Bain Capital, Horizon and IAG Capital.

We strongly oppose surveillance capitalism. Our bespoke hardware and software architectures protect user data at every level of the stack, and no data is beamed off-device without explicit user consent.

We are counter-positioned against the giants through our open platform that values privacy, rapid iteration speed, unique hardware & software features, and spatial R&D roadmap.

We were founded by Tom Suarez, an engineer and second-time founder who has consistently worn Google Glass and other customized AR/VR devices since 2013. Tom also did wearable computing research under Dr. Thad Starner, a pioneer in this space since the 1990s, at Georgia Tech's Contextual Computing Group.

Our chief science officer, Dr. Rehmi Post, adds deep scientific and technical credentials across wearable computing, computational imaging and optics, embedded systems, and smart textiles. He was one of the 'Borgs' at MIT, having built and worn his own wearable computer in 1995. He is known for early wearable computing and smart-textiles work, co-founding RFID company ThingMagic, and research spanning sensing, optics, MEMS, and open-source hardware.

Our team includes engineers, designers, and researchers from Apple, Samsung Research, MIT, XREAL, Leap Motion, DARPA and more. We have full-time talent for every aspect of product development in-house, including industrial design, human-computer interaction, mechanical engineering, electronics, software, firmware, and optics.

The Role

This is a design first role on the HCI team. We're looking for an interaction and product designer who can also write front-end code to prototype their own ideas on the device.

There's no existing playbook for an eye-controlled operating system that people wear all day. You'll design RavenOS from 0 to 1, starting with the most fundamental interactions: how you click, type, scroll, and navigate with your eyes and voice, what an app is on a computer that stays out of the way until you need it, and how the system responds to you without blocking your view of the world.

After the foundations, you'll design the experiences built on top of them. We treat each experience on Raven Prism like a 0-to-1 product of its own. For each one, you'll work out why it belongs on your face, design its interaction model from scratch, and keep refining it until every detail is right.

What You'll Do

  • Design the core interaction model of RavenOS, including pointing, selecting, typing, navigating, and system feedback for eye and voice input.
  • Define how apps, windows, and notifications work on an ambient computer, and design the system UI that ties them together.
  • Own experiences end to end, from early concepts to shipped product.
  • Prototype in code and test on real glasses. Gaze interactions have to be felt to be judged, and a static mockup can't show you that.
  • Create the visual and motion language, including typography, color, layout, and animation, for a display that sits on top of the real world.
  • Work closely with engineers to take designs to production and make sure the details survive the trip.
  • Build the design system, components, and guidelines that developers will use to make their own apps for Raven Prism.
  • Test with real people in real hands-free situations, and update your designs based on what you learn.

What We're Looking For

  • A portfolio of shipped product, interaction, or UI design work.
  • Experience designing systems, not just individual screens. You can create a pattern and apply it consistently across a whole platform.
  • Strong skills in interaction design, motion, typography, and visual design, and the ability to explain the reasoning behind your decisions.
  • Hands-on experience with design and prototyping tools (Figma, Framer, ProtoPie, or similar) or front-end code (HTML/CSS/JavaScript, React, SwiftUI, or similar). You don't need to be a software engineer, but you can build working prototypes yourself.
  • Comfort working on problems where there's no prior example to follow.
  • A real interest in privacy and in technology that respects both the wearer and the people around them.
  • Enjoyment of working in a small, fast, hands-on team.

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing for AR, VR, wearables, spatial computing, automotive, or other non-traditional interfaces.
  • Familiarity with eye tracking, gaze interaction, voice UI, or accessibility input methods.
  • Motion or 3D design skills (After Effects, Rive, Blender, Spline).
  • Creative coding experience (p5.js, Three.js, shaders).
  • Experience designing OS-level UI such as launchers, system shells, or platform design systems.
  • A background in HCI research.
