About Raven Resonance

Raven Resonance builds stylish ambient computers in glasses form for all-day wear, plus a new operating system that enables intuitive interactions with apps and physical objects.

Our first product, Raven Prism, has the form factor of a stylish pair of glasses, but is powered by a moddable Linux-based OS. It has eye control, hot-swappable batteries, and a full-color waveguide display. Raven Prism 1 is designed for Technical Creatives and has pre-orders.

We design and engineer custom hardware & software at our San Francisco lab and are manufacturing in the United States.

(Learn more about our design decisions.)

We are funded by VCs including Tim Draper, Bain Capital, Horizon and IAG Capital.

We strongly oppose surveillance capitalism. Our bespoke hardware and software architectures protect user data at every level of the stack, and no data is beamed off-device without explicit user consent.

We are counter-positioned against the giants through our open platform that values privacy, rapid iteration speed, unique hardware & software features, and spatial R&D roadmap.

We were founded by Tom Suarez, an engineer and second-time founder who has consistently worn Google Glass and other customized AR/VR devices since 2013. Tom also did wearable computing research under Dr. Thad Starner, a pioneer in this space since the 1990s, at Georgia Tech's Contextual Computing Group.

Our chief science officer, Dr. Rehmi Post, adds deep scientific and technical credentials across wearable computing, computational imaging and optics, embedded systems, and smart textiles. He was one of the 'Borgs' at MIT, having built and worn his own wearable computer in 1995. He is known for early wearable computing and smart-textiles work, co-founding RFID company ThingMagic, and research spanning sensing, optics, MEMS, and open-source hardware.

Our team includes engineers, designers, and researchers from Apple, Samsung Research, MIT, XREAL, Leap Motion, DARPA and more. We have full-time talent for every aspect of product development in-house, including industrial design, human-computer interaction, mechanical engineering, electronics, software, firmware, and optics.

The Role

We are hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team in San Francisco. This is primarily a product design role, but as with all roles at Raven it is interdisciplinary and you'll touch many areas of the product.

We strive to make our wearable computers highly-functional and well-designed for all-day use. Your work will contribute to how people feel when they use Raven Prism.

What you'll do

  • Use CAD software to independently model prototypes while balancing functional, manufacturing, and industrial design requirements.
  • Manufacture and assemble prototypes with a high level of craftsmanship using rapid prototyping techniques (predominantly 3D printing, both FDM and SLA).
  • Engage with external vendors to source components and collaborate on joint development and custom NRE projects.
  • Develop testing and manufacturing fixtures for a wide variety of mechanical and optical assemblies.
  • Develop and execute testing procedures for the evaluation of new components and subsystems with statistical analysis.
  • NPI research & development for future products.
  • Wear prototypes outside the lab for quantitative and qualitative measurements.
  • Assist in various shop, manufacturing and office infrastructure development as needed, including selecting, sourcing, and training on new equipment.
  • Assist in future team development and hiring.

Qualifications

  • 5-15 years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills (Solidworks preferred, but not required).
  • Experience with rigorous testing and qualification processes.
  • You find creative solutions to challenging engineering problems in resource constrained environments.
  • You have a personal interest in augmented or virtual reality, or wearables in general.
  • (bonus) You have set up a product assembly line at a CM.
  • (bonus) You have experience making wearables (with or without electronics).
  • (bonus) You have worked in an early-stage startup environment.
